There are roughly 42,000 religions in the world, and 19 major world religions. Religion has an important place in the consciousness of mankind. It provides a basis in which cultural morals are set, and explanation for why things do and don’t happen, and an idea of who we are and why we exist. Religion can also provide a strong support system on many levels. Unfortunately, people also use religion to justify many separatist ideas and evil acts.
I have heard may people tell me they have given up religion and replaced it with something better…spirituality. For them it is a walk from the ridged confines of dogma into a world of freedom. Within this new world they feel they are able to explore different ideas and beliefs. They might even believe that only through certain forms of spirituality can they find higher levels of consciousness and maybe even some form of enlightenment. They often believe religion and spiritual growth are counterproductive and rigidly reject their religious past. But when you think about it, isn’t this also a form of separatism?
Spirituality is defined as a broad concept with room for many perspectives. In general, it includes a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and it typically involves a search for meaning in life. As such, it is a universal human experience—something that touches us all.
No matter what your belief, or non-belief, every form of religion and spiritual practice has its place and at their foundation you will discover many universal truths. In fact, even some of the texts are shared. Is your focus ascendance and enlightenment? Throughout history people from a wide spectrum of religions and spiritual groups have experienced some form of ascension and enlightenment. The stories of miracles and encounters with the divine are their very foundation.
My point is this – honor your roots. Honor your past teachers. Honor the teachers and roots of others. We all bring something special to the table. We all have something significant to share. Remember, God has an infinite number of expressions of Self, and there are an infinite number of paths to God/Creator.
